Join us for a fireside chat with Assoc. Prof Anne Howard on Wednesday 5 October 2022 as she shares her professional journey with us. Interviewed by Professor Johannes Kern.

A/Prof Howard is a dermatologist with 27 years' experience who qualified as a physician before completing her dermatology training. She was the first female chairman of the Victorian faculty and during that time doubled the number of training positions in Dermatology through liaising with state government officials. She was on the then Board of Censors from 1995-1999 and in 2005 became the first female president of the College.

She was Head of Dermatology at Western Hospital until 2020, and ran the Vulval Dermatology clinic at the Mercy Hospital and then Head of Dermatology at the Royal Women's Hospital until 2019. She has been a consultant dermatologist at the Children’s Hospital for many years and is still a consultant dermatologist at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. She has been running a monthly Nail clinic at the Skin and Cancer Foundation, now the Skin Health Institute for around 30 years, is the only such service in Australia.

Anne is also the ex-president of the Australasian College of Dermatologists and is an Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer at Melbourne University.

Special interests include nail disease, skin cancer, skin disease associated with internal disease, women’s and children’s skin problems.



Professor johannes kern

Prof. Johannes Kern trained as a dermatologist and obtained his PhD from the University of Freiburg (Germany). After relocating to Melbourne he joined the Skin Health Institute, where he is part of the nail clinic team and runs a nail procedure and advanced surgery list. Johannes has a strong interest in clinical and translational research in autoimmune and inflammatory skin disease and non-melanoma skin cancer. 

He has recently been appointed Professor of Dermatology, Monash University, Central Clinical School and a Deputy Director Dermatology at the Alfred Hospital
