Meet the Clinical Trials Team

Associate Professor Peter Foley MBBS, MD, FACD

Research Director, Board Member Skin Health Institute

Associate Professor Peter Foley graduated MBBS, BMedSc from Monash University in 1987, and MD from The University of Melbourne in 1996. He completed his dermatology training in Melbourne, obtaining Fellowship of the Australasian College of Dermatologists in 1997. He is Director of Research at the Skin Health Institute and the Head of Dermatology Research at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne. He currently holds the position of Associate Professor, Department of Medicine at The University of Melbourne. In addition to running a busy private practice, he is a visiting medical officer to the Photobiology, Dermatology Biologics, and Dermatology Investigation clinics at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, and the Phototherapy and Biologics clinics at the Skin Health Institute.

His interests include psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, hidradenitis suppurativa, photosensitivity disorders, and non-surgical management of nonmelanoma skin cancers. Associate Professor Foley is Australia’s only councillor on the International Psoriasis Council, is co-convener of the Australasian Psoriasis Registry, is a former steering committee member of the Group for Research and Assessment of Psoriasis and Psoriatic Arthritis GRAPPA) and is a founding member of the Australasian Psoriasis Collaboration. He is participating in the NPS MedicineWise bDMARD program and is on the Board of the Photomedicine Society. He remains a longstanding member on Cancer Council Australia’s National Skin Cancer Committee and was part of the writing group for the revision of Keratinocyte Carcinoma Guidelines.

He has been an investigator in over 120 clinical trials and has over 120 published manuscripts.

Associate Professor Alvin Chong MBBS, BMed, FACD

Principal Investigator

Associate Professor Chong is a senior dermatologist at the Skin Health Institute. 

A/Prof Chong is very involved in undergraduate and post-graduate dermatology education. He teaches at the University of Melbourne and is the Coordinator and Facilitator of the Institute's GP Workshops on Dermoscopy, Skin Cancer and Inflammatory Skin Diseases and has now trained over 500 Australian GPs. A/Prof Chong is the Director of Education at the Institute and heads up the Institute's Transplant Clinic. He has also been Victorian Censor for the Australasian College of Dermatologists.

A/Prof Chong has been elected Member of the prestigious Melbourne University Academy of Clinical Teachers and is known for his passion for teaching.

Associate Professor Chris Baker MBBS, FACD, GAICD

Principal Investigator

Associate Professor Chris Baker is a clinical dermatologist based in Melbourne and the former President of the Australasian College of Dermatologists. A/Prof Baker has particular interest in advanced psoriasis therapies, photodermatology and phototherapy, and clinical trials. He is the Director of the Department of Dermatology at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne and past president of the Skin Health Institute. He is also a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

A/Prof Baker established the first dedicated photodermatology and light testing facility in Australia at St Vincent's Hospital. He has been co-investigator on a number of clinical trials for biologic therapies and conducts advanced psoriasis clinics at the Skin Health Institute and St Vincent's Hospital. He was involved in the implementation and development of local treatment protocols. 

A/Prof Baker was co-founder of the Australasian Psoriasis Registry (APR), an online Australian and New Zealand registry established in 2008 for psoriasis patients on systemic and biologic therapies. He has authored papers on goals of care and quality of life studied in psoriasis. He is currently involved in a collaborative project developing biofabrication of skin and 3D printing.

Dr Ferial Ismail BMedSci MBBS

Clinical Trials Fellow

Dr Ferial Ismail is the Clinical Trials Fellow for 2022. She graduated from Deakin University with a Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery in 2016 and completed an internship and residency at University Hospital Geelong. In 2019, she worked as a dermatology research fellow at Sinclair Dermatology in Melbourne and subsequently worked as a medical registrar in Geelong and Hobart.  She is currently completing a Master of Remote and Indigenous Health through Flinders University.

Dr Ismail enjoys bushwalking and has recently completed a number of multi-day hikes in the Tasmanian wilderness. She has been involved in volunteering in nature conservation projects around Victoria and Tasmania over the last few years.


The trial unit has a full-time clinical trials fellow, an experienced team of clinical trials nurse coordinators and clinical trials administration officers who assist in the operation of the department.

All staff maintain current ICH GCP training and IATA certification for sample shipping. We offer onsite pathology sample collection and preparation. We have onsite pharmacy capabilities with blinded and unblinded staff who are able to dispense, reconstitute, prepare and administer investigational product (IP) including oral, topical, intramuscular and subcutaneous routes. Our staff have extensive experience across multiple electronic data capture platforms and thorough knowledge and use of patient-reported outcomes. We have qualified and experienced assessors in the following areas:

Comprehensive internal Standard Operating Procedures provide guidance to staff around trial-related practices such as Informed Consent, Pharmacy Processes, Equipment Maintenance and Calibration, Adverse Event Recording and Reporting, Storage and Retention of Essential Documents.
