Dermatopathology Team


Melbourne Pathology's aim is to provide unrivalled quality in skin pathology reporting, matched by operational performance in all areas of service delivery. Six specialist pathologists work together to provide a comprehensive dermatopathology service.

Their consultative approach ensures that interesting, unusual or difficult cases are reviewed by a panel of dermatopathologists ensuring accurate diagnosis combined with a lifelong learning approach. We provide the laboratory back up and other services required for:

  • Clinicopathological correlation and interpretive advice
  • Specialised testing, including direct immunoflorescence and appropriate immunoperoxidase staining
  • Prompt reporting



Dr O'Keefe graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1980 and subsequently worked at the Austin Hospital before commencing dermatology training in 1983. After attaining his Fellowship in the Australasian College of Dermatologists he worked in Glasgow from 1986 - 1987. On returning to Melbourne he worked as a sessional Dermatologist at St Vincent's Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute and commenced a private dermatology practice.

In order to pursue his interest in dermatopathology, Dr O'Keefe commenced training as a Pathologist and completed his Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 1995. He maintained a part-time practice in dermatology during his pathology training and then worked half-time in his dermatology practice and half-time in dermatopathology, initially at Dorevitch Pathology and from 2001 in his own dermatopathology laboratory, Dermpath, until 2011 when he joined Melbourne Pathology.

Dr O'Keefe was appointed Director of Pathology at the Skin Health Institute in 2015. He retired from clinical dermatology in 2018.

MBChB, FRCPA, Diploma in Dermatopathology (ICDP-UEMS)

Dr Saurabh Prakash trained in Anatomical Pathology at Geelong, Western and Royal Melbourne Hospitals and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 2008. He subsequently held specialist appointments at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Western Health and Melbourne Pathology.

In 2018, Dr Prakash was successful in the ICDP-UEMS Board Certifying Examination for Special Qualification in Dermatopathology and has also completed a Professional certificate in Dermatoscopy for Pathologists. He is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology and Australasian Dermatopathology Society.

At Melbourne Pathology his practice is exclusively in the field of dermatopathology, working collaboratively with dermatologists, plastic surgeons and skin cancer specialists.

MBBS, FRCPA, Diploma in Dermatopathology (ICDP-UEMS)

Dr Tan graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2002 and attained Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 2011.

He commenced his training in Anatomical Pathology as a Registrar at the Royal Darwin Hospital, and completed
his training with Pathology Queensland.

Dr Tan joined Melbourne Pathology in 2011 and has since worked to develop expertise in dermatopathology under guidance from the senior team. In 2014, Dr Tan was successful in the ICDP-UEMS Board Certifying Examination for Special Qualification in Dermatopathology.

Dr Khamu is a Dermatopathologist who joined our Collingwood laboratory in July 2017.

Dr Khamu graduated from the University of Queensland in 2005. He undertook his Anatomical Pathology training in Brisbane between 2007 and 2012, having completed rotations at various institutions including the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. During this time he was also an associate lecturer in Pathology at the University of Queensland.

Upon completion of his training, Dr Khamu joined Melbourne Pathology in early 2012 as a Consultant Pathologist. In 2013, he returned to Brisbane, having been given the opportunity to work with Professor David Weedon at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. Over the five years in this role, Dr Khamu gained valuable and broad dermatopathology experience, including GP and dermatology skin reporting. He also continued to enjoy teaching, playing an active role in the education of pathology and dermatology registrars, as well as GPs.

MBBS, BMedSc (Hons), FRCPA

After graduating from the University of Adelaide in 2005 with a MBBS and BMedSc (Hons), Dr McGlaughlin undertook her intern year at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide. She completed her first year of pathology training at the IMVS, Adelaide before moving to Melbourne to take up a position as Registrar in the Histopathology Department at Melbourne Pathology.

After completing her training, Dr McGlaughlin became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2012 and commenced as a Histopathologist at Melbourne Pathology soon after.

BMedSci (Hons), Dip. Anat, MBBS, FRCPA

A graduate of the University of Queensland, Dr Loh completed her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2010. She then went on to complete a post-graduate diploma in Surgical Anatomy at the University of Melbourne. Dr Loh commenced as an intern at Ballarat Health Services in 2011 before completing further training at various hospitals. These included Monash Health, The Royal Women’s and Children’s Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital before completing her final year of Registrar training in Anatomical Pathology at Melbourne Pathology.

Dr Loh became a fellow of The Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2019 and joined Australian Clinical Labs in Geelong as an Anatomical Pathologist shortly after.

Dr Loh commenced at Melbourne Pathology in January 2020 and has special interests in dermatopathology, head and neck, urology and breast pathology.

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2006 with a MBBS and BMedSc, Dr Liu undertook her intern year at the Geelong Hospital. She completed her first year of training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2008, then continued her training in anatomical pathology at the Alfred Hospital until 2011. During this time, Dr Liu also participated in teaching duties at Monash.

In 2011, Dr Liu took up residency at Cabrini Hospital under the guidance of Dr William Downey, before spending her final year of training at the Western Hospital.

After completing her training in late 2012, Dr Liu became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and joined Melbourne Pathology in February 2013 as a Histopathologist. Dr Liu is part of the Sonic SkinDx reporting team and has a special interest in dermatopathology.
