Melbourne Pathology's aim is to provide unrivalled quality in skin pathology reporting, matched by operational performance in all areas of service delivery. Six specialist pathologists work together to provide a comprehensive dermatopathology service.

Their consultative approach ensures that interesting, unusual or difficult cases are reviewed by a panel of dermatopathologists ensuring accurate diagnosis combined with a lifelong learning approach. We provide the laboratory back up and other services required for:

  • Clinicopathological correlation and interpretive advice
  • Specialised testing, including direct immunoflorescence and appropriate immunoperoxidase staining
  • Prompt reporting


DR ROD O'KEEFE

MBBS, FRCPA, FACD

Dr O'Keefe graduated from the University of Melbourne in 1980 and subsequently worked at the Austin Hospital before commencing dermatology training in 1983. After attaining his Fellowship in the Australasian College of Dermatologists he worked in Glasgow from 1986 - 1987. On returning to Melbourne he worked as a sessional Dermatologist at St Vincent's Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Institute and commenced a private dermatology practice.

In order to pursue his interest in dermatopathology, Dr O'Keefe commenced training as a Pathologist and completed his Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 1995. He maintained a part-time practice in dermatology during his pathology training and then worked half-time in his dermatology practice and half-time in dermatopathology, initially at Dorevitch Pathology and from 2001 in his own dermatopathology laboratory, Dermpath, until 2011 when he joined Melbourne Pathology.

Dr O'Keefe was appointed Director of Pathology at the Skin Health Institute in 2015. He retired from clinical dermatology in 2018.

DR SAURABH PRAKASH

MBChB, FRCPA, Diploma in Dermatopathology (ICDP-UEMS)

Dr Saurabh Prakash trained in Anatomical Pathology at Geelong, Western and Royal Melbourne Hospitals and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 2008. He subsequently held specialist appointments at Royal Melbourne Hospital, Western Health and Melbourne Pathology.

In 2018, Dr Prakash was successful in the ICDP-UEMS Board Certifying Examination for Special Qualification in Dermatopathology and has also completed a Professional certificate in Dermatoscopy for Pathologists. He is a member of the American Society of Dermatopathology and Australasian Dermatopathology Society.

At Melbourne Pathology his practice is exclusively in the field of dermatopathology, working collaboratively with dermatologists, plastic surgeons and skin cancer specialists.

DR GUAN TAN

MBBS, FRCPA, Diploma in Dermatopathology (ICDP-UEMS)

Dr Tan graduated from the University of Melbourne in 2002 and attained Fellowship in the Royal Australasian College of Pathologists in 2011.

He commenced his training in Anatomical Pathology as a Registrar at the Royal Darwin Hospital, and completed his training with Pathology Queensland.

Dr Tan joined Melbourne Pathology in 2011 and has since worked to develop expertise in dermatopathology. In 2014, Dr Tan was successful in the ICDP-UEMS Board Certifying Examination for Special Qualification in Dermatopathology. He is a member of the International Society of Dermatopathology, American Society of Dermatopathology and Australasian Dermatopathology Society

DR TIM KHAMU

BAppSc(MedSc), MBBS, FRCPA

Dr Khamu is a Dermatopathologist who joined our Collingwood laboratory in July 2017.

Dr Khamu graduated from the University of Queensland in 2005. He undertook his Anatomical Pathology training in Brisbane between 2007 and 2012, having completed rotations at various institutions including the Princess Alexandra Hospital, the Royal Brisbane and Women's Hospital and Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. During this time he was also an associate lecturer in Pathology at the University of Queensland.

Upon completion of his training, Dr Khamu joined Melbourne Pathology in early 2012 as a Consultant Pathologist. In 2013, he returned to Brisbane, having been given the opportunity to work with Professor David Weedon at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology. Over the five years in this role, Dr Khamu gained valuable and broad dermatopathology experience, including GP and dermatology skin reporting. He also continued to enjoy teaching, playing an active role in the education of pathology and dermatology registrars, as well as GPs.

Dr Leonard Wu

MBBS, PhD Med, FRCPA

Dr Wu originally graduated and qualified in China with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine in 1983. During the mid-90s, Dr Wu devoted his career to medical research, gaining a PhD in Medicine at the Austin and Repatriation Medical Centre in 1996 with a total of 24 publications in both domestic and international journals.

From 1998, Dr Wu undertook full anatomical pathology training at various hospitals including the Royal Melbourne, Mercy and Western Hospitals, Hitech Pathology (which later merged with Melbourne Pathology), St Vincent's Pathology and ACT Pathology. He obtained his Fellowship of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia in 2002.

Soon after, Dr Wu worked as a consultant pathologist at Healthscope Pathology and gained a deep depth of experience in areas of surgical pathology and cytology. In 2007, Dr Wu was appointed Director of Histology and Cytology for the department. During his time at Dorevitch Pathology in the following ten years, he dedicated himself to specialising in skin pathology. From 2017 to 2018, he was again involved in administrative roles as an Acting Head of Department of Histology and Cytology.

In January 2021, Dr Wu joined Sonic Healthcare working at Sullivan Nicolaides Pathology in Queensland. In August, Dr Wu joined Melbourne Pathology as an Anatomical Pathologist where he is a member of the Dermatopathology and Sonic SkinDx reporting teams.

Trilingual in English, Mandarin and Cantonese, Dr Wu maintains an active role in the Chinese medical community.


Dr Adam Scarlett

MBBS, BMedSci, FRCPA, Dip. Applied Anatomy Dissection

A graduate of the University of Melbourne, Dr Scarlett completed a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery in 2009. He subsequently went on to complete a Graduate Diploma of Applied Anatomy by Dissection at the University of New England in NSW in 2013.

Dr Scarlett undertook his pathology training at a number of facilities including St Vincent’s, Peter MacCallum, and Dorevitch Ballarat.

In December 2018, Dr Scarlett became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and was appointed Consultant Anatomical Pathologist at Dorevitch Pathology Traralgon.

Dr Scarlett joined Melbourne Pathology in early 2021. He has a special interest in uropathology, head and neck pathology, and skin pathology, and is a member of the Melbourne Pathology Dermatopathology reporting team


DR GRACE LIU

MBBS, BMedSc, FRCPA 

After graduating from the University of Melbourne in 2006 with a MBBS and BMedSc, Dr Liu undertook her intern year at the Geelong Hospital. She completed her first year of training at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in 2008, then continued her training in anatomical pathology at the Alfred Hospital until 2011. During this time, Dr Liu also participated in teaching duties at Monash.

In 2011, Dr Liu took up residency at Cabrini Hospital under the guidance of Dr William Downey, before spending her final year of training at the Western Hospital.

After completing her training in late 2012, Dr Liu became a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australasia and joined Melbourne Pathology in February 2013 as a Histopathologist. Dr Liu is part of the Sonic SkinDx reporting team and has a special interest in dermatopathology.
